How To Get Better At Being Envious?

Social comparison is a toxic mental trap that prevents us from embracing our own strengths and uniqueness. Yet we humans can’t stop comparing ourselves to people around us and envy the success of others.
This week, we got the chance to sit down and talk to Ms. Quach Thu Trang, Business Development Manager of CPA Australia, who gave as a great piece of advice as to how to channel career envy into motivation.
Trang shared, “Comparing yourself to others is not necessarily a bad thing. If envy forces you to self-reflect on your career and strengths/weaknesses then embrace that “benign” jealousy. Instead of feeling frustrated seeing your peers flourish and thrive, you should try to find out how these people manage to get to where they are and learn from that.”
“Everyone has their own timeline for success, and chances are maybe you’re just a late bloomer. So don’t get too stressed out and depressed by other people’s achievements, and try to do everything with commitment and dedication. Having the right attitude is the first step to success and once you’ve had that, a pay raise or recognition from other people will soon follow.”
Apart from her full-time job at CPA Australia, Trang strives to give back to the community and is currently an Industry Mentor for RMIT Career Mentoring Program. This program is complimentary and open to all postgraduate students who would like to maximise their potential by consulting with industry mentors who are successful in their field.
