A chance to develop a new network of working professionals during MBA

For Tommy Nguyen, getting the chance to develop a new network of working professionals during his MBA has proven valuable in his own career in the Vietnamese business world.
After completing his master’s degree in 2014, Tommy established an interior fabric supply business importing and distributing quality fabric products such as curtains and upholstery – now supplying 200 dealers throughout the country.
The alumnus credits part of his success in expanding the enterprise to the networks and skills that he developed in class at RMIT.
“I was lucky to get to know a lot of people. Some of them are now directors of banks or are people with factories. We have a good group of friends. We catch up at least once a month,” says Tommy, who is Director of Jotex Fabrics.
“Networking is even more important in Vietnamese business culture. You have to have a certain network in the market. I learned that, in order to have success, you cannot do it alone. You have to do it with your team and with people that can support you.”
Having previously completed a bachelor’s degree at RMIT and spent a few years in different roles in the workforce, Tommy returned to RMIT to undertake the MBA to broaden his business and management skills.
“I enjoyed all of the courses in the MBA, such as the ones on leadership and organisational behaviour. I remember a lot from those classes. But, most importantly, the soft skills have really helped me. Before I joined RMIT, I wasn’t that confident. After a long time, I have become more confident. I’m not afraid to approach people.”
