How to be a good leader

If you see yourself as becoming a future leader in the business world, here is some great advice from our alumnus Tran Huu Minh, Executive Master of Business Administration (2009) to help you on your journey.
As a Vice President Marketing Asia Pacific for VISAs and someone who has worked for more than 20 years with big technology companies, Minh has a lot of expertise and experience to share about leading diverse teams.
“When it comes to leadership, I think one the biggest challenges that we face today is that there is no business isn’t intertwined with a global business environment. What does that mean? When you enlarge or expand any organization, you have to step across multiple markets. It brings challenges of how to manage people across different cultures, and have different expectations.
It’s important to understand it doesn’t matter if you work in Australia, Vietnam, China or the US. Leadership requires emotion intelligence. Leadership requires you to bring people with you on a journey to achieve goals or priorities. Bringing those people with you requires an ability to understanding that you are leading a diverse team, and it doesn’t matter if you come from the same country, there are different individuals within that team. Without the ability of focusing on emotion intelligence, you lack the ability to understand the things that you are doing and how they impact people around you, how they influence. It’s also important to make sure there is a sense of motivation and purpose for every employee within organization.”
