Mai Khoi Family is a pioneering initiative dedicated to transforming lives within underserved HIV communities at Mai Khoi Clinic. We create a vital digital and social safe space, empowering people living with HIV with essential knowledge and practical toolkits to increase their health knowledge, overcome self-stigma and significantly improve their well-being. This project directly confronts the 'unseen burden' of isolation and stigma often overlooked by conventional support. We also aim to make a profound, long-lasting impact on the wider HIV community by sharing our cultivated insights through primary research and publications.

The Unseen Burden: How little social support carries so much weight for people living with HIV (PLHIV). While current efforts predominantly focus on medical treatment and prevention frameworks, they often fail to address the critical need for social support in patient reintegration and sustained engagement. As PLHIV are frequently left to navigate complex information alone, they suffer greatly from self-stigma, isolation, and disengagement from clinics, resentment toward society, and even suicide.

Recognizing this profound disparity, I collaborated with Mai Khoi Clinic – an HIV treatment provider for underserved communities since 2004, part of the Archdiocese of Saigon – HCMC, to understand PLHIV's diverse perspectives and specific hesitations, then transform these insights into actionable solutions. This led to the launch of Mai Khoi Family, an initiative designed to enhance patient engagement and increase HIV and mental health literacy through an inclusive learning program and innovative digital delivery.

In the first phase, we introduced a new Zalo Official Account featuring weekly engagement content for existing patients and a tailored onboarding package for newly diagnosed individuals. The project achieved exceptionally promising results during its two-week pilot, commencing June 15. Organic subscriptions soared to nearly 600, quadrupling the reach of previous channels. Crucially, almost 150 subscribers actively engage with our weekly content, and our support portal receives nearly 200 chat inquiries each week.

These outcomes powerfully prove a significant pool of unmet needs among PLHIV that had remained largely unseen for years. The key challenge I overcame was translating complex community insights into effective, yet adaptable, solutions within a clinical setting. This success directly stems from the problem-solving mindset cultivated through my RMIT education. Active listening, thinking outside the box, and strategically proposing worthy solutions are paramount principles for any impactful, community-driven project.
