I believe tools that support deep work should be accessible to everyone

Time Jar was born during my final semester at RMIT, a time when I was juggling study, work, a personal project, and running goal. I wanted to understand how much time I was truly dedicating to each area. Inspired by the “10,000 hours to mastery” idea and frustrated with the rigid Pomodoro method—which often interrupted my flow—I saw a gap in the market: a simple, intuitive tool to track deep, uninterrupted work sessions. That realization became the foundation for Time Jar.

Since launching, the app has reached over 600 users worldwide, with active communities in Vietnam, the US, Australia, and China. Most users are students, and many have shared how Time Jar helped them stay focused and mindful of their time. The app is free because I believe tools that support deep work should be accessible to everyone, especially learners trying to build long-term habits.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was designing an experience that felt both functional and inspiring. I spent countless hours studying Apple’s design documentation, exploring other apps, and applying what I learned in RMIT’s Mobile App Development course. It was a demanding process, but also a valuable one that helped me grow as both a developer and a designer.

The proudest moment came when my promotional post on Threads went viral. Within one night, the app gained over 100 downloads, and the momentum continued for days. Reading user reviews—seeing people genuinely find the app helpful—brought me immense joy. As an engineer, there’s no better feeling than knowing something you built is improving someone’s day.

RMIT played a crucial role in shaping this journey. The courses taught me how to design, build, and launch real-world applications. Beyond the classroom, RMIT’s industry connections helped me gain professional experience at an enterprise-level company, where I developed the practical skills and mindset needed to become a mobile developer. Time Jar is the result of that foundation.
