DEEM Coffee is more than just a premium beverage brand — it’s a pioneer in sustainable innovation. As part of the DEEM ecosystem, DEEM Coffee leads a unique recycling initiative that transforms used coffee grounds into biodegradable bioplastics, creating eco-friendly products with real-world applications. This project reflects DEEM’s commitment to ESG principles and a circular economy, making sustainability a core part of the customer experience.
Don’t try to solve it all alone — build a network of people who believe in your mission and bring in the expertise you lack.
We were driven by the urgent need to reduce waste in the coffee industry. Every cup of coffee leaves behind grounds that are typically discarded. We saw this as an opportunity, not a byproduct, and developed a project to recycle used coffee grounds into biodegradable bioplastics. Our goal is to reduce plastic use and promote a circular economy through practical, eco-friendly solutions. The project has become a key pillar in our ESG strategy and brand identity. Since launch, we’ve repurposed over 500kg of used coffee grounds, partnering with local makers to produce functional, sustainable items like plant pots, packaging, and lifestyle accessories. It has sparked community awareness and inspired other local cafés to explore waste-reduction efforts.
One major challenge was developing a scalable, cost-effective method to process coffee waste into usable bioplastic. We overcame this by collaborating with researchers and sustainable material startups. Our proudest moment was showcasing our first line of recycled coffee-ground products at a sustainability fair and seeing real customer engagement and curiosity. It was proof that people care, and that our concept had value not only environmentally but emotionally. It turned waste into conversation, and conversation into change.
RMIT’s network has played a key role in expanding our perspective and reach. Through connections with alumni, faculty, and entrepreneurship programs, we’ve gained access to mentorship, collaboration opportunities, and a supportive community that values innovation and sustainability
