With a heart full of hopes, fears and doubts, I embarked on a new journey at RMIT, not knowing that it would later be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life.

I come from a small fishing town in South-Central Vietnam where life is easy, repetitive and archaic, and people seemingly have a common life goal of settling down there, forever.

As a child growing up, my only wish was to escape the norm and lead a global citizen’s life, one that was so different from mine then. Being raised by a single parent has taught me education is the express ticket to my dream and made me aware of the reality that my mother and I couldn’t afford such luxuries as overseas studies to fulfil my dream.

RMIT, to me, was the light at the end of the tunnel at the time.

It was tough during my first year, but once I got the Academic Achievement for Current Students scholarship [for a GPA of 3.93/4.0], things started to get more manageable.

It was the education and the people at RMIT that gave me the courage to identify myself.

My mindset was constantly foggy back then due to the fact that I neither came from a gifted school or a notable background, and I thought that the only way to prove myself was to achieve excellent scores.

This caused me to be extremely vulnerable to stress and self-doubt.

I gradually changed my mindset, helping to create momentum for my excellent working and academic results.

Along the way, the more I studied, communicated and worked, the more I realised that the value of education is to help me become a better version of myself and how to apply the knowledge I’ve acquired effectively.

I thought I would be a loner when first joined RMIT, yet I found a community I now cherish and formed connections that would last a lifetime.

I take much pride in introducing myself as an RMIT student and now a graduate.

This pride is powerful and is a reminder for me to continuously strive for self-betterment adhering to the University’s culture and values of inclusion and innovation.

RMIT really is a home to me. To those thinking of coming to RMIT, I hope you will join, tailor your stories here and further complete our family.
