[HCMC] Career Insights Special: Unconventional Career Pathways

What does it mean to build a successful career when the traditional career path is no longer the only way forward? Closing the 2026 Career Insights series, Career Insights Special: Unconventional Career Pathways explored the nuances behind careers that extend beyond the conventional 9-to-5.

On Wednesday, 28 October – the special edition of Career Insights series shifted the conversation from the series’ earlier discussions on emerging fields such as AI and digital transformation to a more personal question: What does it take to build a career on your own terms?

The five senior alumni, each having established their professional identity through portfolio careers, content creation or entrepreneurship, shared candid reflections on their journeys, highlighting the decisions that led them away from conventional career paths, how their definitions of success have evolved, and the mindsets young professionals need to navigate outside the conventional playbook.

Career Insights Special edition opened key insights on building a sustainable career pathway while pursuing the so-called career freedom.

A Changing Job Landscape Calls for New Possibilities

The world of work is evolving. From the growing influence of AI and the expansion of the gig economy to the rise of independent professionals and innovative start-ups, traditional ideas of job security and linear career progression are being challenged.

For graduates and young professionals, this shift presents an opportunity to explore different ways of working, develop multiple income streams and build professional identities that extend beyond a single job title or organisation.

Pursuing an unconventional pathway requires individuals to understand not only the opportunities available, but also the responsibilities that come with greater independence.

Freedom Without Discipline is Chaos

Flexibility is often seen as one of the biggest attractions of an unconventional career. But as the speakers pointed out, having the freedom to choose your own direction does not mean having fewer responsibilities.

Ha (Khloé) Kieu, Founder & Creative Director, NOT A HOUSE studio, shared how her definition of success has shifted. Rather than measuring achievement solely through conventional milestones, she now places greater value on doing work she enjoys while maintaining a sense of freedom.

For her, however, freedom is not about letting go of structure or ambition. It is about staying grounded in her values while finding a sustainable balance between the two.

‘Freedom without discipline is chaos’, she said.

This sentiment resonated with Han Hong, Co-Founder OOEE Design Lab & Creative Strategist, who also emphasised self-discipline as a fundamental skill for anyone considering a non-traditional career.

Reflecting on her journey across different professional fields, from working as a CEO’s personal assistant to freelancing and eventually establishing her own design studio, Han highlighted the importance of being able to manage oneself.

Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket

Building a multi-faceted career through a digital presence takes more than a large following. It requires a clear sense of identity, strategic thinking and the ability to translate online influence into opportunities beyond the screen.

Luan Nguyen, Educator, Book Author, Content Creator, and Entrepreneur, who has built a community of more than 500,000 followers across multiple platforms, shared his perspective on the role of content creation in developing a sustainable portfolio career.

For him, content creation is a way to establish authenticity, build trust and create meaningful connections that can eventually translate into tangible ventures.

Your Network is An Asset, and Your Values Are Your Compass

Moving from an established corporate environment to building an independent venture is a significant transition.

For Duc Nguyen, Creative Consultant & Brand Storyteller & Founder, All-in Studio, one of the most valuable resources during this process was the network of professional relationships he had cultivated over the years.

He highlighted how existing connections and the trust built through his corporate experience helped him secure clients in the early stages of his business.

Beyond professional networks, personal values can also shape the direction of a career.

Barrett Le, Founder & CEO, Bearplus, offered a perspective on how life milestones, particularly the growing responsibilities that come with family, can prompt professionals to reconsider their priorities and redefine what success looks like.

These moments of change serve as opportunities to realign professional ambitions with personal values and long-term life goals. For independent professionals navigating an unpredictable career landscape, knowing when to adapt can be just as important as knowing when to pursue a new opportunity.

Barrett Le, Founder & CEO, Bearplus, shared how his core personal values align with and guide his professional journey.

The discussions offered a reminder that unconventional career pathways are not necessarily easier alternatives to traditional employment, but rather different ways of navigating one’s professional and personal journey.

For those considering a different path, perhaps the most important question is not whether our career follows convention, but whether it aligns with the life we want to build.
