Alumnus joins Global Entrepreneurship Summit, tours US
RMIT Vietnam alumnus Vu Binh Minh was one of a small number of foreign journalists chosen to attend the seventh annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit in California last month.
The summit, an initiative by U.S. President Barack Obama, showcased inspiring entrepreneurs and investors from around the world, while highlighting entrepreneurship as a means to address some of the world’s most intractable challenges.
Minh, a graduate of the Bachelor of Communications (Professional Communication) program, was inspired by Ken S. Rosenberg, the Vice Mayor of the City of Mountain View in California.
“It was such a treasure for me to hear about the steps the City of Mountain View has taken to foster innovation and entrepreneurship,” Minh said.
“Starting a business is a way to grow the country, so it’s best for the government and education system to support young entrepreneurs.”
Prior to the summit and on a program arranged by the Foreign Press Centre, Minh visited some of the most prominent institutions in the US today: NASA, Harvard University, MIT, Google, TechCrunch and Airbnb.
“I had opportunities to interact with entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists, designers and other members of the start-up community in the U.S.,” Minh said.
“The talk from the Google representative provided me with an overview of the latest Google News Lab innovations and how I can use these innovations in my own reporting.”
Minh was working as a reporter for the prestigious Tuoi Tre News when the U.S. Consulate in HCMC nominated her for the summit. The 26-year-old said it was probably her strong international education background and life experiences that impressed the consulate.
“In addition to graduating from RMIT Vietnam, I am an active member of the Global Shapers, a World Economic Forum initiative led by young people who are exceptional in their potential and in their drive to contribute to their communities.”
As the youngest member in the reporting tour, Minh faced some early challenges when she met her cohort who hailed from 14 countries around the world.
“I felt a bit shocked when I saw that most of the other participants held senior positions,” Minh said.
“However, I regained my confidence and built relationships with them quite well.
“I just tried my best to make use of my knowledge and skills to perform my role professionally.”
