An alumnus steps into family business after years of working in corporate world

Stepping into his family’s agriculture business after a number of years in the corporate world was a bit of a ‘shock’ at first for Nguyen Ngoc Hoang.
The career move took him from being in air-conditioned offices in the big city to being out in the fields with farmers.
“It was a new experience. At first, maybe it was just because of my love to the family business and to my parents. But after six months of working with the farmers to understand how they operated, I began to love it,” he says.
Having graduated from his MBA program at RMIT, Hoang was determined to apply the knowledge that he had gained in class and while working with companies such as Nestle, Puma and Colgate.
The family business, Nguyen Tan, specialises in providing plastic agricultural products such as irrigation systems that dramatically increase the efficiency and productivity of farms.
“At that time, I thought the business was lacking in structure and was not as well developed as it could be,” says Hoang.
“Studying the MBA really helped me a lot. It was a good chance for me to develop my knowledge.
“When you’re working at the same time as you’re studying a master’s degree, what you learn is really connected to your work. You can see whether what you’re learning is working and then do some re-thinking.”
For Hoang, a highlight of studying in the MBA was the connections he made with classmates.
“It was a great chance to expand our networks. I made a lot of good friends. And, until now, we still talk together in a group and we share everything. We help each other in our career paths.”
