Introduction
My sister and I founded Thanh Di with a team built entirely on family ties. My mother and aunt, who have dedicated their lives to the art of tailoring, lead our craftsmanship. My sister manages the finances, while I drive operations, branding, design, and customer experience. This clear division of expertise allows us to optimise our resources from day one.

Reviving my family legacy was never the original plan. After years in the corporate world and a decade running my own beauty business, I never imagined returning to my mother’s craft. That changed three years ago. During a chaotic Tet rush, custom orders surged just as my mother’s health declined. I stepped in, applying my background in operations to systematise the highly personalised requests.

Seeing the process improve brought a quiet realisation. I found another way to bring beauty to others through my mother’s Áo dài, an opportunity that had been resting right before my eyes.

To help preserve this craft, I founded Thanh Di with a simple guiding thought: “Elegant Heritage.” It is a genuine wish to care for the trade my family built over decades. Every body has its own unique beauty, and a skilled tailor knows how to gently elevate it.

I saw this clearly when we welcomed an anxious, plus-size international client. She doubted she could ever look good in an Áo dài. Yet, the finished garment fit her well on the first try. Radiant in front of the mirror, she confessed she had never felt so beautiful in traditional clothing.

That moment deepened my understanding of our work. It is not just about sewing garments. It is about nurturing confidence, sharing joy, and feeling a quiet pride when international friends embrace a Vietnamese cultural symbol.

Inheriting a traditional business brings both advantages and natural barriers. Still, by thoughtfully telling our story and refining operations, I believe a heritage brand can find a sustainable place. The Áo dài is a beloved cultural icon, and the narrative we weave into it carries a personal signature that younger generations and global visitors appreciate.

Because attire is a gentle expression of culture, Thanh Di is meant to be more than a tailor shop. We envision a welcoming space where customers experience heritage firsthand through bespoke tailoring and shared workshops.

I hope our journey shows that local businesses can balance innovation with tradition, honoring our elegant roots without erasing historical footprints. When we share the voices of lifelong artisans, the beauty passed down across generations helps sustain our cultural vitality.

Critical and design thinking guide my daily work. Staying open to new ideas and adapting them to our context gives me fresh perspectives on familiar tasks. Working alongside the older generation provides lessons from decades of wisdom, while collaborating with younger minds brings necessary modern viewpoints.

Ultimately, this journey is an ongoing practice of balance. It is about harmonising the old with the new, the modern with the traditional, and the personal “me” with the collective “us.”
